Tip #1. Certain mattress constructions will take on more body impressions than others while some won’t change at all. This way, you will continue to fall in love with it again and again every night. In the end, your new bed will feel like it did the day you first fell in love with it. But the good news is that your mattress will adjust to your body and it will take on the “showroom feel” after the proper amount of time and pressure. It may not feel like the bed you tried when you visited our showroom. To be perfectly clear, you may not fall in love with your new mattress at first. So we present reality in all its glory to prevent you from waking up frustrated and confused as your mattress begins the natural process of softening up and taking on your form. We believe a mattress should age like a fine wine rather than going sour shortly after sleeping on it. This presents us with the opportunity to have an open dialog about what to expect and how well the mattress will fit your sleep needs and body shape as you sleep. Some naturally begin to sag sooner than others due to the quality of the materials. Every mattress is different and some will even have little to no body impressions. Our mission is to show you how it will actually feel throughout the majority of its lifespan rather than the short-term initial feel. We want you to fully understand how the mattress will change over time. Understanding the Mattress “Break in” Process As a result, the products presented in most mattress retail stores do not provide an accurate idea of how your bed will feel over time. The problem with this procedure is that a newer mattress does not feel the same way as it will feel over time. Your typical mattress store displays rows of mattresses, frequently changed with a new replacement the moment it begins to show signs of any type of wear. The truth is that while the dip is normal, it is very unlikely that you would be able to experience this dip in the store. Why is it much softer now than it felt in the store when you selected it? Unfortunately, this is the reality for many people who shop at major mattress retailers. It’s normal and there is a depth the dip should not exceed before your warranty kicks in. The mattress is even beginning to form a dip! You call the store and they explain that the dip is nothing to be worried about. Suddenly you begin waking up to a sore back. The first couple of weeks you sleep like a baby and wake up refreshed! But then you begin to notice something – the mattress just feels different. You begin to sleep on it and it feels just like it did in the store. It feels comfortable, yet firm enough in the right places to provide the back support you need. You try several models, then find the perfect fit for you. Imagine you just visited a mattress store. Why Your New Mattress Feels Softer Than in Store This presentation provides you with more accurate expectations for the way your mattress will feel. In fact, we take pride in our products and offer this transparency intentionally. As a business, we realize presenting mattresses which have already been “broken in” (and therefore may have a slight dip in the center) runs the risk of affecting the perception of our mattress quality or even make us appear careless about our showroom presentation. Walking into our showroom you may notice that some of our mattresses already have body impressions. This creates what we call a body impression (not to be confused with mattress sag). As you continue to sleep on your mattress, the pressure from your body will relax the foam and mold it more and more into your sleeping form. This firmness is caused by the foam layers. Is your new mattress too firm? A brand new mattress will often be firmer – sometimes much firmer – than it will become over time after the “break in” period. Continue reading to learn the cause and how to fix it! Why Your New Mattress Feels Firmer Than in Store This can actually be a good thing – depending on the cause. For some, it may feel softer, but for most, it may feel firmer. Unfortunately, many people have purchased a new bed only to find that it feels entirely different in their home than it did in the showroom when they first tried it. Mattresses are a major investment and they play a critical role in your quality of life. When it comes to buying a mattress, getting just the right fit is crucial.
